It targets policymakers, analysts, and stakeholders engaged in SDG implementation.
on Sustainable Development
In January 2017, the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs was established by decree of the UAE Cabinet. Chaired by His
Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange, the
committee comprises 9 federal entities responsible for the national implementation of the SDGs. They monitor progress,
report on targets, and engage stakeholders to drive sustainable development in the UAE.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
It began at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012, with initial proposals by Colombia and Guatemala in 2011. Leading up to Rio+20, countries like Peru and the UAE championed the SDGs.
The UAE actively participated in the SDG negotiations through the Open Working Group (OWG) of the UN General Assembly from 2013 to 2014, representing the Asia-Pacific region with Cyprus and Singapore. The UAE contributed on key issues such as energy, education, global partnerships, health, water, and women’s empowerment, also representing the Arab Group.
The SDGs were finalized in August 2015 after extensive intergovernmental negotiations. At the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, the UAE highlighted priorities like clean energy, affordable food, quality education and healthcare, sustainable economic growth, healthy ecosystems, and resource efficiency. The UAE pledged to “leave no one behind” and promote a sustainable, resilient future.
H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability, contributing to the report “Resilient People, Resilient Planet.”
The UAE is dedicated to achieving the SDGs through strategic, comprehensive efforts that address economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The National Committee on SDGs coordinates these efforts, integrating the goals into plans, programs and initiatives. The UAE also shares successful practices and innovative solutions in global initiatives to drive sustainable and inclusive development.
