Press Release – UAE Shares Its Vision and Experience to Enhance Global Statistical Innovation During the 56th Session of the UN Statistical Commission

A delegation from the UAE participated in the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, recently held in New York City. This event represents the world’s largest gathering of experts in statistics and data science, bringing together heads and directors of statistical entities and data centres from around the world, along with academics, experts, and consultants from UN agencies and international organizations. The UAE delegation included leaders from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), local statistical centres, Digital Dubai Authority, the Department of Statistics and Community Development in Sharjah, and the Ras Al Khaimah Statistics Centre.
The UAE’s participation this year reaffirms its leading role in strengthening the global statistical landscape as it begins its membership in the UN Statistical Commission for the 2025–2028 term. This participation aimed to support global efforts to developing and sustaining statistical systems, contributing to the establishment of policies, standards, and methodologies that foster a data driven future, and showcasing the UAE’s commitment to shaping the future of global statistics. The country’s involvement also highlights its dedication to fostering international partnerships for building more advanced and sustainable societies.
The UAE delegation participated in various sessions, workshops, and specialised events, exchanging innovative ideas on utilizing big data and artificial intelligence for decision-making and policy formulation, relying on accurate and comprehensive statistics. Discussions also emphasised the role of statistics in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Hanan Ahli: Strengthening the UAE’s Role in Leading Global Statistical Thought
Her Excellency Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, affirmed that the UAE’s membership in the UN Statistical Commission reflects its steadfast commitment to international cooperation in the statistical field. She emphasised the country’s dedication to building strategic partnerships that enhance the efficiency of global statistical systems, positioning the UAE as a leader in shaping statistical thought and formulating effective statistical policies that support sustainable development agendas.
Mohammed Hassan: Enhancing the Sustainability of Global Statistical Systems
His Excellency Mohammed Hassan, Executive Director of the Statistics and Data Sciences Sector at FCSC and the UAE’s representative in the UN Statistical Commission, highlighted that the UAE not only advances its own national statistical system but also actively supports other nations. Through statistical cooperation frameworks and strategic partnerships, the UAE contributes to strengthening the sustainability of global statistical systems.
He stated: “The UAE continues its efforts to redefine the concept of innovative statistical work globally by actively participating in the UN Statistical Commission meetings. This reflects our commitment to enhancing statistical innovation mechanisms and tools, developing evidence-based policies, and significantly contributing to the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.”
Active Participation
During the commission’s sessions, the UAE delegation participated in discussions on “Innovative Approaches to Statistical Capacity Development ,” exploring cutting-edge solutions to enhance global statistical capabilities and prepare nations for future statistical challenges. They also contributed to the session on “The Future of National Statistical Offices ” and attended the BRICS National Statistical Agencies meeting, where they discussed the importance of global statistical integration through joint initiatives. Additionally, the delegation participated in a meeting organised by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC STAT) addressing the priorities and perspectives of GCC countries within the UN Statistical Commission discussions.
Throughout their participation, the UAE delegation held several bilateral meetings with international organisations and global statistical institutions, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and Statistics Austria. These discussions focused on sharing best practices developed by the UAE in implementing administrative record-based statistical projects and exploring avenues for collaboration in applying key statistical standards for data collection and computation methodologies.
Mohammed Hassan also led key discussions on specialised statistical topics, including “National Accounts” and “Population and Housing Censuses,” emphasising the role of AI and alternative data sources in generating accurate statistics that support strategic planning and enhance economic competitiveness. He reiterated the UAE statistical community’s commitment to harnessing advanced technology tools to provide real-time data and maximise its utility in strengthening statistical institutions’ capacity to generate SDG indicator data. Additional interventions covered social, demographic, and economic statistics, labour and employment statistics, data science, and national frameworks for quality assurance.
It is worth noting that the United Nations Statistical Commission was established in 1946 as the highest international body responsible for developing the global statistical system. The commission brings together top statistical experts from UN member states and is responsible for making key decisions related to statistical work, developing international statistical standards, and ensuring their implementation.
The commission also plays a crucial role in supporting national statistical systems of UN member states, coordinating statistical activities among countries and international organisations, and providing guidance to UN agencies on data collection, analysis, and dissemination. The commission comprises 24 elected members representing different regions of the world, selected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The UAE has recorded significant growth in its real GDP by 3.8%, reaching AED 1.322 trillion in the first nine months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, non-oil GDP expanded by 4.5% to AED 987 billion, accounting for 74.6% of total real GDP, while oil-related activities accounted for 25.4%.
Commenting on this performance, H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, emphasized that the UAE’s sustained economic growth is a testament to the success of its policies and strategies aimed at enhancing economic diversification, streamlining business operations, and driving the expansion of new economy sectors as key drivers of sustainable economic and social development. He highlighted that, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE has built an agile and globally competitive economic model capable of adapting to global challenges and rapid changes.
“The UAE continues to increase the contribution of non-oil sectors to the national economy by developing flexible economic legislation, enhancing global trade openness, and building strategic partnerships with key international markets. These efforts align with the “We the UAE 2031” vision, which aims to grow the UAE’s GDP to AED 3 trillion within the next decade and secure its position as a global economic hub,” H.E. bin Touq added.
Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, stated: “The UAE’s GDP growth over the past nine months reflects our strong economic performance and future-driven vision focused on sustainable economic expansion, led by non-oil sectors.”
“Economic diversification remains a key pillar of the UAE national strategy, ensuring long-term growth in the economy and in key economic and development indicators,” she emphasized.
Top-Growing Economic Sectors
During the first nine months of 2024, the UAE’s fastest-growing economic sectors showcased remarkable expansion compared to the same period in 2023. The transport and storage sector experienced a significant growth of 7.9%, largely driven by a surge in passenger traffic at UAE airports, which welcomed over 103 million travelers, marking a 20% increase. Similarly, the construction and building sector expanded by 7.4%, fueled by substantial investments in large-scale urban infrastructure projects. The financial and insurance sector also saw steady growth, rising by 6.8%, while government activities expanded by 5.0%. Additionally, the hospitality and restaurant sector recorded a 4.9% increase, reflecting the continued momentum in the tourism industry.
When examining the key contributors to non-oil GDP, trade emerged as the largest sector, accounting for 16.5% of total non-oil economic output. Following closely behind, manufacturing contributed 15.1%, underscoring the UAE’s industrial strength. The financial and insurance sector played a crucial role, making up 12.1% of non-oil GDP, while construction and building activities contributed 11.7%, and the real estate accounted for 7.6%.
Overall, the UAE’s nominal GDP reached AED 1.486 trillion during the first nine months of 2024, reflecting an impressive 6% year-on-year growth. The nominal non-oil GDP also grew significantly, reaching AED 1.136 trillion, with a 6.6% increase. Notably, non-oil sectors contributed 76.5% to the total GDP, further highlighting the UAE’s progress in economic diversification and sustainable growth.

The World Governments Summit 2025 kicked off with a high-level ministerial roundtable on the future of Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the theme “Envisioning 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development,” the session brought together an esteemed group of global and national leaders to discuss long-term strategies rooted in innovation and advanced technology to drive the global development agenda. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to a forward-thinking approach centered on strategic foresight and proactive planning, ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable future by 2045.
The meeting was convened in response to unprecedented global challenges, emphasizing the need for enhanced international cooperation and actionable steps aligned with global dialogues. The discussions highlighted the importance of knowledge exchange between ministers and government leaders to establish a unified and ambitious agenda for post-2030 development.
Chaired by H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness & Knowledge Exchange, Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs and Vice-Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs, the meeting welcomed ministers from India, Canada, Uzbekistan, Brunei Darussalam, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Seychelles, Madagascar, Malta, South Africa, Mongolia, Latvia, and others, International organizations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and UNICEF were also in attendance. Notable UAE leaders included H.E. Hessa Buhumaid, Director General, Community Development Authority, Dubai, H.E Abdulla Al Saleh, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, H.E Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, H.E. Dr Shaikha Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Abudhabi Environment Agency, H.E Omar Al Suwaidi, Director of the Executive Office and Sustainability Directorate in ANOC, H.E Dr Amer Sharif, CEO of the Dubai Academic Health Corporation, Dr. Manal Taryam, CEO of Noor Dubai Foundation and Mohammad Al Shamsi, Chief Officer Climate Change and Sustainability at the Dubai Electricity, and other national leaders in the UAE.
Discussions were guided by the United Nations’ SDG Progress Report, which underscored the urgency of overcoming existing obstacles and crafting a global vision that extends beyond 2030. Key areas of focus included climate change, technological equity, and demographic shifts all of which demand long-term, strategic solutions.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness & Knowledge Exchange, Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs and Vice-Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs stated: “Under the visionary leadership of the UAE, the National Committee on SDGs has launched the Ministerial Roundtable Platform introducing ‘XDGs 2045’ at the World Governments Summit. This initiative is not just a continuation of past development agendas, it is a bold leap towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.”
He further emphasized: “What was sufficient yesterday will not be enough for tomorrow. The future we aspire to cannot be built through individual efforts alone but through collective collaboration within effective participatory frameworks. Together, we lay the foundation for a global movement where development is fair, and opportunities are accessible to all without exception.”
H.E. Belfor Fabio García Henao, Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (MICT), Colombia, stated: “Artificial intelligence and big data possess immense potential as catalysts for eradicating poverty, advancing sustainable education, and ensuring universal energy access is provided. They are harnessed to serve humanity and drive transformative change, rather than becoming tools that exacerbate economic and social disparities.
H.E. Mukhtar Babayev, representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues and Climate Envoy stated: “Confronting the climate crisis requires partnerships. At COP29 we found fair and shared solutions to finance sustainable development, and we proved that countries could agree and the multilateral process could deliver. We are proud to continue working alongside the UAE on these global priorities because we believe that together we are more than the sum of our parts.”
H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, said: “Our responsibility to protect nature is not just an optional consideration in our global development journey; it is a fundamental pillar for ensuring our continued progress and success for the climate, our well-being, and the health of our planet.”
H.E. Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) added: “As we approach 2030, it is clear we are not on track to achieve SDG7—millions still lack access to clean energy. Urgent action, stronger cooperation, and systemic solutions are needed to drive progress. IRENA remains committed to shaping a sustainable energy future for all.”
The roundtable concluded with a call from H.E. Hessa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, urging the international community to continue joint efforts while emphasizing the importance of integrating all segments of society in shaping future policies and ensuring that progress pathways are equitable for all. During the Ministerial Roundtable, the launch of the global XDGs 2045 Global Survey was announced as an interactive tool designed to ensure that the next development agenda is built on a collective vision that reflects the aspirations and voices of people from diverse continents and cultural backgrounds.

The UAE Government has launched the third cohort of the Global Councils on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 12th World Government Summit 2025, held in Dubai from February 11 to 13. The launch took place during a high-level ministerial roundtable chaired by H.E. Ohood Bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Government Development and the Future and Chair of the Global Councils on Sustainable Development Goals, with the participation of H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Vice Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs, along with the 18 Council Chairs from 17 countries and 17 Vice Chairs from the UAE.
H.E. Ohood Al Roumi emphasized that, under the guidance of the UAE’s leadership, the UAE continues to enhance efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by focusing on readiness and practical opportunities to double qualitative achievements and empower governments to drive sustainable development.
Since its inception in 2018 through the World Governments Summit platform, the ongoing work of the Global Councils on SDGs reflects the UAE’s commitment to accelerating international cooperation for achieving development goals. It also supports efforts to ensure a more sustainable future for future generations by sharing expertise, fostering partnerships, focusing on implementation and impact, and uniting efforts to build a sustainable future.
H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah stated: “Under the directives of the UAE’s leadership, the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals is launching the third cohort of the Global Councils on SDGs through the World Governments Summit platform. This initiative provides a comprehensive system for forecasting the future of sustainable development efforts. It serves as a strategic step to enhance constructive international cooperation and add a new qualitative dimension to national efforts by expanding knowledge partnerships with partner countries in the Government Experience Exchange Programme. The councils act as a global bridge connecting the UAE with decision-makers and thought leaders in sustainability, working together to accelerate global efforts and develop mechanisms that enhance the achievement of SDGs beyond 2030.”
The National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals has launched the third edition of the Global Councils, adopting a more inclusive and pioneering model that brings together decision-makers and thought leaders from 17 partner governments worldwide. These governments are strategically partnered with the UAE through the Government Experience Exchange Programme, covering areas such as government research and development, investment, energy, environment, agriculture, advanced technology, and green and blue economies. The initiative aims to accelerate SDG implementation, address key global issues, highlight international priorities, and strengthen the development agenda through the SDGs in Action Forum at the World Governments Summit. It also fosters experience exchange and best practices in sustainability to promote international collaboration and drive progress towards the 2030 Agenda and beyond.
Leadership of the Global Councils on SDGs (2025-2026)
H.E. Ohood Bint Khalfan Al Roumi will chair the Global Councils from 2025 to 2026, with H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah serving as Vice Chair. Each council will operate as an independent working group, comprising a Chair, a Vice Chair, and council members.

Press Release – “SDGs in Action” Forum in Its 9th Edition as Part of the World Governments Summit 2025

The UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organized the ninth edition of the “SDGs in Action” Forum as part of the World Governments Summit 2025, held in Dubai from February 11–13. The forum brought together heads of state, ministers, UN officials, representatives of prestigious international organizations, and a distinguished group of thought leaders and policymakers under the theme “Shaping Future Governments.”
Under the theme “Envisioning Development Goals 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development,” the forum spotlighted six key pillars aligned with the UN’s SDGs: health, gender equality, economic growth, marine life, climate action, and global partnerships. Through a series of panel discussions, the forum displayed leading national and global models for driving innovative solutions to accelerate SDG implementation. Key topics included ensuring resilient and inclusive societies, deploying innovative strategies to enhance universal health coverage, empowering women through gender equality initiatives, advancing inclusive economic growth to create sustainable job opportunities, fostering pathways towards a sustainable blue economy, and strengthening global partnerships to achieve the post-2030 development agenda.
The forum also addressed pressing global challenges by presenting transformative and innovative solutions to accelerate sustainable development. It convened global leaders, ministers, policymakers, executives, and experts across diverse sectors. Distinguished participants included H.E. During her keynote session on “Protecting Oceans and Marine Life: Pathways to a Sustainable Blue Economy,” H.E. Dr. Amna Al Dahak underscored the forum’s role as a global platform for dialogue and collaboration. She highlighted the importance of innovative solutions for a more sustainable future, particularly in promoting a sustainable blue economy and leveraging advanced technologies for ocean conservation.
H.E. Al Dahak added “The forum provides policymakers with an opportunity to reinforce global commitments to protecting marine biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience. The country ranked 7th globally and 1st regionally in the 2024 Gender Inequality Index (GII) issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), reaffirming the UAE’s leadership in fostering gender balance and accelerating progress toward sustainable development goals.

The “SDGs in Action” Forum, as part of the 12th edition of the World Governments Summit, will feature a diverse agenda of national and global sessions and dialogues. The UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) convened its first meeting of 2025 on the sidelines of the “SDGs in Action” Forum, under the theme “Envisioning Development Goals 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development ” as part of the World Governments Summit. The meeting reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to reinforcing its leadership in achieving the SDGs nationally and globally. It served as a strategic platform to review the latest updates on national efforts, discuss the action plan for the current year, and foster strategic partnerships that accelerate progress and drive sustainable development toward a brighter future.
During the meeting, the committee’s General Secretariat presented the agenda for the “SDGs in Action” Forum 2025, held as part of the World Governments Summit, highlighting its role as a leading global platform for exchanging insights, experiences, and best international practices. Additionally, the roadmap for the committee’s 2025 activities was discussed, featuring a series of key events and international engagements aimed at strengthening coordination between national and international entities and ensuring the effective implementation of initiatives and projects that contribute to sustainable development.
In this context, His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs, emphasized the committee’s pivotal role in steering national efforts towards achieving the 2030 global agenda, stating: “The UAE does not merely participate—it leads change through ambitious visions, innovative policies, and strategic partnerships that create real impact. The UAE’s National Committee on SDGs comprises a distinguished group of national entities playing a key role in implementing policies that support the UN’s goals. Members include the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and the Ministry of Community Empowerment.
It is worth noting that the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs was established to implement the 2030 SDGs, align the UAE’s priorities with global objectives, and exchange expertise with partners locally and internationally. The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), in partnership with the United Nations’ “Data Science Leaders Network,” organized an international seminar titled “Harnessing Data Science Mechanisms towards Economic Statistics Development” in Dubai. The event was attended by officials from the United Nations, as well as experts and specialists in big data from Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Malawi, Mozambique, Peru, Rwanda, and other countries.
The international seminar highlighted the vital role of data and statistics in guiding effective policies and decision-making. It discussed key practices related to the use of big data and artificial intelligence mechanisms that will support significant economic opportunities by providing accurate and highly reliable information. This aims to achieve future insights that contribute to improving wellbeing and promoting prosperity for the UAE and the world.
The seminar included inspirational sessions covering topics such as “The Global Charter for the Future and the Digital Transformation of Economic Statistics” and “The Journey of Artificial Intelligence in the UAE: From Data to Insights.” It also discussed the pivotal role of big data in supporting national statistical systems across various countries.
Hanan Ahli: Effective partnerships are the first steps in activating the UAE’s membership in the UN Statistical Commission
Her Excellency Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, emphasized that the seminar is part of the centre’s initiatives to translate the UAE government’s directions for investing in the latest technology and data sciences. UAE advances 3 places, ranking 7th globally in 2024 World Competitiveness Report

DUBAI, 18th June, 2024 His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, stated that the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and through the dedicated efforts of its people, continues to improve its standing each year, achieving higher ranks across various global competitiveness indicators.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said, "In one of the most important global competitiveness reports issued by the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, the UAE moved up three places, reaching seventh place globally. The UAE is also among the top ten globally in more than 90 key and sub-indicators in the 2024 World Competitiveness Report."
His Highness said, "Our thanks and appreciation go to all the teams in the government, economic, and development sectors who work with one spirit to achieve a single goal: the progress of the United Arab Emirates."
Building on last year’s achievement of entering the top 10, the UAE made a notable leap in the 2024 World Competitiveness report, advancing three positions to 7th place worldwide, ahead of Norway, Iceland, Japan, Canada and Finland.
The UAE performed exceptionally across various pillars of the report, ranking 2nd globally in Economic Performance, 4th in Government Efficiency, 10th in Business Efficiency.

Top Rankings in Key Indicators
The World Competitiveness Report classifies the countries based on four main pillars and 20 sub-pillars encompassing 336 competitive indicators across various economic, administrative, and social fields, including government efficiency, education, and innovation. In this year’s report, the UAE advanced in all four main pillars.
The UAE ranked among the top 10 globally in over 90 key and sub-indicators. The UAE ranked 1st globally in 11 indicators including industrial disputes, labour force (%), employment (%), and household consumption expenditure- real growth.
The UAE secured 2nd place globally in 9 indicators, including tourism receipts, females in parliament, labour force growth, adaptably of government policy, and absence of bureaucracy.
The UAE ranked 3rd globally in 6 indicators including collected capital and property taxes, immigration laws, management of cities and percentage of government budget surplus.
The UAE also achieved 4th place in 12 indicators including consumer price inflation, long-term unemployment, international experience, overall productivity (ppp), labour regulation, and the balance of commercial services and employment in the public sector.
The UAE also achieved 5th place in 13 indicators including GDP (PPP) per capita, quality of air transportation, energy infrastructure, graduates in sciences, start-up procedures, unemployment legislation, foreign highly-skilled personnel, national culture, unemployment rate and tax evasion.

Discussing efforts to achieve Gulf statistical excellence at the global level

The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center discussed with a delegation from the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, the national and joint efforts of the GCC countries towards achieving global statistical excellence, and the two sides discussed ways to enhance fruitful cooperation frameworks and expand areas of future partnerships.
This came within a visit by the delegation of the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, headed by Intisar bint Abdullah Al-Wahaibi, Director General of the Center, during which she met with Hanan Mansour Ahli, Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center and the Federal Center team.
The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre plays an active role in the Standing Committee for Statistical Work Affairs of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, which includes the heads and directors of national statistical agencies in the member states, in addition to a representative from the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and the Director General of the Gulf Statistical Center, and the Committee supports the Gulf statistical work roadmap, efforts to harmonize and coordinate work in the region and enhance statistical capacities in the demographic, social, economic, environmental, energy and tourism sectors. Methodologies and data quality, indicators of development, progress and sustainability, information and statistical awareness.
National Projects
The meeting discussed the strategic national statistical projects of the UAE, their role in serving development programs at the national and international levels, and their contribution to improving the UAE’s competitiveness in global reports and indicators and achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030, and the meeting praised the role of the GCC Statistical Center in monitoring figures and statistics concerned with vital sectors in the GCC countries, and introducing the experience and specificity of the GCC countries and what they represent of a unified economic and social bloc, in addition to supporting National strategic decision-making and planning processes for current and future Gulf projects.
Strengthening Gulf work mechanisms
Hanan Mansour Ahli affirmed the firm commitment of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre in the UAE, to support the strengthening of the mechanisms of joint statistical work of the Gulf statistical centers, and the employment of modern and innovative technologies and harnessing big data science and artificial intelligence to serve the development of vital sectors and keep pace with international practices In the field of statistics.
She praised the efforts and initiatives of the Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and its effective role in raising the efficiency of the Gulf statistical system.
UAE Model For
her part, Intisar bint Abdullah Al Wahaibia praised the efforts of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center in highlighting the UAE’s pioneering statistical model, which was reflected in her selection as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period 2025-2028, noting that the UAE’s membership in the United Nations Statistical Commission contributes to strengthening the joint Gulf statistical work.
She said that the distinguished level of cooperation between national statistical centers and agencies in the GCC countries represents an important factor in promoting joint Gulf action, implementing the strategic plan for joint Gulf statistical work, harmonizing national statistical strategies with international best practices in this field, and exchanging knowledge and experiences to enhance statistical capabilities at the level of the GCC countries.
Enhancing Gulf statistical cooperation
The meeting discussed ways to benefit from the UAE’s hosting of the regional headquarters of the United Nations Big Data Platform, and to enhance Cooperation between the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center and the Gulf Statistical Center in this field in light of the capabilities provided by the platform that support the development of accurate official statistics, build capacities for the use of big data and data science in statistical authorities in the region, benefit from successful practices and exchange experiences and knowledge in employing modern technology for data analysis, in a way that contributes to innovating solutions and developing distinguished services that enhance efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, and create an incubating and supportive environment for innovators in the field of advanced data science in Gulf states.
The meeting discussed projects and initiatives related to linking and integrating statistical data between the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center and the Gulf Statistical Center, which include data collection, exchange, processing and dissemination automatically and securely, to support the preparation of statistical reports and studies in many fields in the GCC countries, which contributes to strengthening joint Gulf action.
Preparations of statistical center’s
The meeting touched on the preparations of the official statistical centers in the GCC countries and the Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. To celebrate the Gulf Statistics Day, which falls on December 24, 2024, which will be celebrated by the Center with all statistical centers and agencies in the GCC countries on December 9, 2024, in order to emphasize the importance of statistics and its role in the development planning process, and to consolidate the partnership between the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf to improve and develop the statistical environment.
It is worth mentioning that the establishment of the Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf was announced and the adoption of the Omani capital Muscat as its permanent headquarters in December 2012, to represent an official source of data, information and statistics of the GCC countries, and its statute was adopted by the Supreme Council of the Cooperation Council, which includes Their Majesties and Highnesses the heads of member states: the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar and the State of Kuwait.
The FCSC Hosts IMF for Workshop on Advanced Practices in Measuring Inflation and CPI Statistics

In a strategic initiative to advance the UAE’s statistical capabilities, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) hosted an expert technical mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This mission conducted an advanced workshop focused on the application of the latest international practices and technologies in calculating inflation rates and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The workshop brought together leading experts in inflation statistics and CPI from local statistical centres across the UAE.
The objective was to integrate latest statistical tools, innovative data sources, and the use of scanner data to enhance the accuracy, timeliness, and comprehensiveness of national statistics. This initiative underscores the commitment to leveraging sophisticated statistical infrastructure to inform policy-making, strategic planning, and national development.
In its effort to continue adhering to the highest international standards and methodologies for statistical indicators, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre emphasised that fostering international cooperation is paramount, especially as the UAE prepares to serve as a member of the United Nations Statistical Commission from 2025 to 2028. The goal is to innovate and standardise national methodologies in partnership with local statistical centres, while enhancing the use of advanced technologies and modern practices in statistical data production. This strategic focus ensures that the UAE’s statistical outputs are both robust and globally competitive.

Ms. Fayeqa Abdulla, Director of Economic Statistics at the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, highlighted the importance of continuously investing in developing statistical capabilities to keep pace with global advancements in utilizing modern techniques in data science for collecting, analyzing, and producing official statistics in the UAE, in collaboration with local statistical centers.
This workshop builds on the momentum of a recent national workshop hosted by the FCSC on measuring and calculating trade-in-services indicators, conducted in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund and esteemed international organizations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The delegation of the State of U.A.E. to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2024 in New York, at the conclusion of the annual UN event, affirmed that the UAE adopts a flexible and constantly evolving cooperative model that aims to expand partnerships, knowledge exchange and fruitful and sustainable development work globally, in a way that supports the achievement of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations for the year 2030, and foresees the prospects for sustainable development for individuals, communities and the planet.
His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Knowledge Exchange and Competitiveness and Chairman of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals, stressed in the speech of the UAE delegation delivered at the end of his participation in the UN Forum at the United Nations Headquarters, that the UAE continues, under the directives of the wise leadership, to support the achievement of sustainable development goals by strengthening partnership agreements, exchanging knowledge, implementing bilateral and joint development projects, and providing assistance that has a sustainable impact.
Abdullah Lootah said: "The UAE will continue its approach of partnership and cooperation for the good of societies and peoples. By aligning its external aid strategy with the Sustainable Development Goals, in 2022 it amounted to more than US$3.4 billion, of which 83% was development aid, and the Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives spent about AED 1.8 billion positively impacting the lives of more than 100 million beneficiaries, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development invested nearly US$60 billion to more than 100 countries, and the Emirates Red Crescent provided 54% of its total assistance to support global development initiatives.
Since the launch of the government’s knowledge exchange program, it has concluded agreements with more than 35 countries, implemented more than 367 initiatives, and trained more than 3.2 million government employees.
During a session on the sixth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is concerned with clean water and hygiene issues, Lootah stressed the importance of promoting global climate action as a key supporter of achieving the rest of the sustainable development goals, and pointed to the UAE’s commitment with the countries of the world to accelerate the pace of achieving development goals. Climate (COP28) We united around the "UAE Agreement", which was described as the most ambitious and comprehensive agreement since the Paris Agreement, and the presidency of the Conference launched the tripartite "Troika of Chairs of the Conferences of the Parties" aimed at uniting efforts until the thirtieth session.

The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the main platform of the United Nations on sustainable development, has played a pivotal role since its inception in 2012, in following up and reviewing what has been implemented at the country level in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This edition of the International Forum was held under the theme "Promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises… Implementing sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions effectively", and throughout the period from 8 to 17 July 2024, delegates participating in this year’s edition of the Forum worked on in-depth revisions of five of the Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 1 to eradicate poverty in all its forms everywhere, Goal 2 to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, Goal 13 to support climate action and call for urgent action to combat climate change and its repercussions, and Goal 16 to promote Inclusive peaceful societies to achieve sustainable development, provide justice for all and build effective and efficient institutions, and Goal 17, which focuses on global partnerships to promote Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
National Committee on SDGs Discusses Enhancing Partnerships with International Organisations and Government Officials

The National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) discussed strengthening global partnerships and cooperation to achieve development goals in meetings with representatives of international organisations and government officials from several countries. These discussions were part of the committee’s delegation’s participation in the ninth annual UN Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum), which recently took place in New York.
The theme for the STI Forum 2024 was: ‘Science, technology, and innovation for reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient, and innovative solutions’. The forum served as a vital platform for global leaders, decision-makers, and experts to exchange knowledge and explore opportunities for cooperation and effective partnerships.
The forum aimed to unify efforts and develop relevant scientific and innovative technologies in pursuit of achieving SDGs, while highlighting the crucial role of science and technology in building a prosperous future and confronting global challenges effectively.
His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs, emphasised the significance of international forums in fostering meaningful cooperation between organisations and governments. He noted that the forum presented an invaluable opportunity to exchange visions and share ideas, thereby accelerating the achievement of development goals.
Lootah stated that the UAE has achieved tangible milestones by employing technology and innovation tools, integrating them into its public policies and future strategies to advance the process of achieving sustainable development goals. He underscored the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, considering it a primary pillar in its future directions and visions. This commitment is pursued through innovative methodologies, clear visions, and strategic plans aimed at benefiting society.
During the participation in the STI Forum, the UAE delegation held several meetings with ministers, officials of international organisations, experts, specialists and representatives of parties concerned with the SDGs globally.
During a meeting with H.E. Jelena Begović, Minister of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation of Serbia, the UAE delegation reviewed the pioneering role of the UAE in supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030, as well as innovative transformational projects across various sectors such as development, investment, and education. The attendees stressed the importance of scientific research in the progress of countries and societies, as well as in achieving SDGs. They also emphasised the necessity of enabling researchers to access sources of funding for scientific research.
The delegation also met with H.E. Pedro Conceição, Director of the Human Development Report Office at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), during which the two sides discussed the significance of exchanging global knowledge and expertise for development and prosperity, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence mechanisms and solutions, as well as in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The attendees emphasised the importance of strengthening efforts to achieve SDGs to ensure the advancement of human development and enhance the quality of life in societies.
The National Committee on SDGs discussed with H.E. Juan José Martínez Badillo, Chief of United Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), New York office, the development of effective models to enhance areas such as foreign investment and food security in countries with economies similar to the UAE. They also emphasised the importance of intensifying efforts and coordination with relevant entities in these countries to provide necessary data and statistics for implementing innovative solutions and high-impact initiatives to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs globally.
At a meeting with H.E. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the delegation reviewed the ‘Global Digital Rights Charter’, which is concerned with bridging the digital divide worldwide and ensuring an open, free, and secure digital future for all, as it leverages scientific and technological developments to identify and address global challenges effectively.
The STI Forum centred its discussions on the Sustainable Development Goals, whose progress will be assessed during the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, scheduled from July 8 to 17, 2024. Particularly, attention will be given to Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 13, 16, and 17.
During the forum sessions, speakers underscored the importance of utilising tools and mechanisms, including scientific research and its applications, to establish a strong foundation. They emphasised the need to support, enhance, and accelerate mechanisms for implementing effective measures at both national and international levels, thereby advancing sustainable development goals and fostering societal prosperity.
The forum, held at the invitation of H.E. Paula Narváez, President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), was overseen by the United Nations joint working group dedicated to science, technology, and innovation for the achievement of sustainable development goals.
