In the presence of H.E. Mohammad Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) signed a strategic MoU with Presight, a company specialized in artificial intelligence and data analytics. The partnership aims to develop the UAE National Data Statistics Platform and enhance national technical and analytical capabilities.
H.E. Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi stated that “this new partnership comes within the framework of the UAE’s comprehensive proactive approach and the leadership’s vision for designing the future, by continuing to harness advanced technologies and artificial intelligence to maximize opportunities, align effectively with rapid transformations, and address emerging challenges.”
He added: “This strategic partnership contributes to strengthening the unification of the UAE’s official statistics and supports the transition towards smart statistics and data-driven decision-making. It also advances the development and integration of the national data ecosystem, provides a unified environment for official statistics across the country, ensures the linkage and integration of economic and social data sources, and enables government entities and decision-makers to access accurate, up-to-date, and real-time data that supports strategic planning and public policy formulation, while enhancing the UAE’s global competitiveness.”
H.E. Maryam bint Ahmed Al Hammadi, Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Cabinet, and General Chief of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, said: “This partnership with Presight reflects the leadership’s vision of building a future-ready, data- and AI-driven government. It represents a qualitative leap in the transformation of the government sector towards smart statistics and comprehensive integration with data from all relevant entities. It also strengthens the ability of these entities to make swift decisions supported by accurate, reliable, and real-time data, accelerating the national development journey and reinforcing the country’s readiness for future changes.”
H.E. noted that the partnership will contribute to enhancing integration between federal and local entities, unifying national data sources, activating agile governance frameworks that respond to the challenges of the digital era, and opening new horizons for leveraging data in support of sustainable development.
For his part, H.E. Mansoor Al Mansoori, Vice Chairman of Presight and Chair of the Advisory Board, said: “Our partnership with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre represents direct support for the UAE Government’s efforts to strengthen the national data ecosystem, stemming from Presight’s firm belief in the importance of data as a fundamental enabler of economic and social policymaking and the transition towards a knowledge-based economy grounded in evidence and intelligent analytics.”
He added that Presight’s advanced technical capabilities in analytics and AI tools will contribute to enhancing the integration of national data and transforming it into actionable insights that support government strategies and drive the national economy towards broader horizons of growth and innovation.
The MoU represents a significant step forward in deploying AI solutions and advanced analytics within a unified national framework. This framework ensures the standardization of statistical methodologies and concepts in line with the highest international standards, while strengthening national data governance and security through hosting on the Federal Network (FedNet).
The partnership reflects the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its national statistical infrastructure, as the platform will support the production of official national statistics, including gross domestic products and balance of payments data. It will also enable government entities to analyze economic and social trends with greater accuracy, optimize resource allocation, improve the quality of government services, and enhance transparency. Furthermore, the platform translates the UAE’s shift from fragmented data systems to a unified national ecosystem based on intelligent analytics, supports the adoption of AI in policymaking and future planning, and reinforces the competitiveness of the national economy, consolidating the UAE’s position globally as a model for smart government.
The partnership underscores the importance of the National Data Statistics Platform as a strategic national asset and a unified foundation for joint statistical work across the country, supporting performance monitoring, impact measurement, and the direction of investments and future strategies, while contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the “We the UAE 2031” Vision.
The insurance sector in the UAE continued its positive performance in 2024, recording a 22% growth in total underwritten insurance premiums, reaching AED 65.1 billion, compared to AED 53.4 billion in 2023, according to data from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) and the Central Bank of the UAE. Data on the country’s insurance sector indicators for 2024 also showed a notable increase in property and liability insurance premiums, which grew by 26.6% to AED 26.3 billion, compared to AED 20.8 billion in 2023. Health insurance premiums rose by 21% to AED 31.3 billion, compared to AED 25.9 billion in 2023, while personal insurance and wealth creation premiums increased by 12% to AED 7.5 billion, up from AED 6.7 billion in 2023.
Total Number of Insurance Policies
According to 2024 statistics, the total number of insurance policies rose to 17.2 million, compared to 15.6 million in 2023, marking a 10% growth. The highest growth rate was recorded in health insurance policies, which saw a record jump of 60%, increasing to 2.2 million policies from 1.4 million in 2023. Meanwhile, the total number of property and liability insurance policies reached 14.6 million, compared to 13.9 million in 2023, registering a 5% growth. The total number of personal insurance and wealth creation policies stood at 305,900, a slight increase from 302,500 in 2023, reflecting a 1% growth.
Technical Provisions
Total technical provisions that insurance companies are required to maintain to meet their financial obligations across all insurance branches rose by 20.9%, reaching AED 92.2 billion in 2024, compared to AED 76.3 billion in 2023. This increase was driven by a 44.9% rise in property and liability insurance provisions, reaching AED 37.6 billion, a 24.1% increase in health insurance provisions to AED 17.0 billion, and a 2.8% rise in personal insurance and wealth creation provisions to AED 37.7 billion in 2024.
Claims Paid
Regarding claims paid, which represent the total amounts disbursed by insurance companies in the UAE to policyholders and beneficiaries during the year for settling insurance claims, statistics indicated a 32% increase in total claims across all insurance branches for both domestic and foreign companies in 2024, reaching AED 41.6 billion. This total comprised AED 28.9 billion paid by national companies and AED 12.7 billion by foreign companies, compared to AED 31.6 billion in 2023, which included AED 21.8 billion paid by national companies and AED 9.8 billion by foreign companies.
This increase was attributed to an 83% rise in claims paid for property and liability insurance, particularly in fire and motor insurance, a 14% increase in health insurance claims paid, and a 26% rise in claims paid for personal insurance and wealth creation policies.
As for incurred claims, which include the total value of claims paid as well as other costs borne by insurance companies during the year, statistics indicate a 45% increase across all insurance branches for both national and foreign companies in 2024, reaching AED 53.3 billion. This total comprised AED 39.1 billion for national companies and AED 14.2 billion for foreign companies, compared to AED 36.6 billion in 2023, which included AED 25.1 billion for national companies and AED 11.5 billion for foreign companies.Invested Assets
Statistics showed an increase in total invested assets in the UAE insurance sector for both national and foreign companies in 2024, representing the total assets held by insurance companies for investment purposes. The total rose by 10% to AED 84.9 billion, comprising AED 48.6 billion for national companies and AED 36.3 billion for foreign companies, compared to AED 77.1 billion in 2023, which included AED 42.1 billion for national companies and AED 35.0 billion for foreign companies. Investments in securities and debt bonds accounted for the largest share of total invested assets at AED 36.3 billion, followed by cash and deposits at AED 25.0 billion. The remaining value was distributed across other categories of invested assets, including real estate investments, loans, and other assets.
AED 929 billion: Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the national economy
The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) announced that the UAE’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.2 in the first half of 2025, reaching AED 929 billion, compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, the non-oil GDP recorded a growth of 5.7%, amounting to AED 720 billion during the same period. Non-oil activities accounted for 77.5% of the UAE’s real GDP, while oil activities contributed 22.5% in the first half of 2025.
H.E. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, affirmed that, under the guidance of the UAE’s wise leadership, the country has adopted a proactive approach that keeps pace with economic developments and trends locally, regionally, and globally. This approach is reflected in the development of competitive economic strategies and legislations, enhancing global economic openness, and creating a business-friendly environment that encourages private sector participation in the growth of non-oil sectors. It also includes the localisation of technology and digital transformation across vital and advanced economic sectors, contributing to positioning the UAE as a pioneering model in economic diversification and supporting its future vision to become a global hub for the new economy by the next decade.
He added: “The positive results achieved by the national economy during the first half of 2025, particularly the 5.7% growth in non-oil GDP, reflects the strength and competitiveness of the UAE’s economic performance and the efficiency of the economic policies implemented by the government. It also underscores the continued progress in reducing dependence on oil, promoting national non-oil industries, and advancing the economic objectives of the We the UAE 2031 vision.”For her part, H.E. Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, affirmed that the strong performance of the UAE’s GDP during the first half of 2025, reaching AED 929billion, reflects the resilience of the national economy and the continued growth momentum driven by non-oil activities such as trade, manufacturing, and construction. She stated: “The rise in the contribution of non-oil sectors to 77.5% confirms the success of the country’s economic diversification policies and its ability to create a flexible and sustainable productive environment based on knowledge and innovation, in line with the UAE’s vision of developing the economy of the future.”
Fastest-Growing Economic Activities
The financial and insurance activities recorded the highest growth among all economic sectorsduring the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, recording an 8.3% increase. This was followed by the construction sector, which grew by 7.9%, the manufacturing sector by 7.0%, and real estate activities by 6.5%.
In terms of contribution to non-oil GDP during the first half of 2025, the trade sector ranked first, accounting for 16.1%, followed by financial and insurance activities at 14.0%, and manufacturing at 13.8%. The construction sector contributed 11.8%, while real estate activities accounted for 7.8%.It is worth noting that the economies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries recorded growth during the first half of 2025, with the UAE achieving the highest growth rates, supported by the strong performance of its non-oil sectors. This reflects the impact of strategic initiatives and policies aimed at enhancing economic diversification in the UAE and contributes to supporting the collective GCC economic trajectory, promoting balanced progress that strengthens economic stability in the region.
The UAE has achieved tangible progress in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reaching a 62% achievement rate in accordance with global methodologies. This reflects the UAE’s firm commitment to developing sustainable policies and “its leadership as a global model in the speed of implementation and institutional integration.
This was announced during a meeting of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which discussed ways to strengthen the national data ecosystem supporting development indicators, and highlighted the importance of improving data quality and enhancing integration among government entities as a fundamental pillar in consolidating the UAE’s progress in global indicators.
The Committee reviewed the latest developments related to the preparation of the Third Voluntary National Review (VNR) in 2026, as well as the progress in implementing the National Sustainable Development Data Plan, which aims to enhance data collection mechanisms and improve efficiency in line with international best practices.
The National Committee on SDGs held its meeting chaired by H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs, with the participation of H.E. Aisha Ahmed Yousef, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Community Empowerment; H.E. Dr. Hussein Abdulrahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector at the Ministry of Health and Prevention; H.E. Ahmed Al Nasser, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Market Policies and Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Market Services at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation; H.E. Mohammed Abdulqader, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Strategy and Policies Sector at the Ministry of Education; H.E. Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC); Lt-Col. Ali Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Director of the Department of Strategy and the Future at the Ministry of Interior; and Eng. Nawal Al Hanaee, Director of the Future Energy Department at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.
The Committee stressed the priority of investing in building national capacities and developing statistical competencies, in addition to expanding cooperation and partnerships with specialized international organizations in statistical methodologies, to enhance data reliability and accuracy, and to support the national sustainable development ecosystem in the long term.
National Data a Pillar for Achieving the SDGs
H.E. Abdulla Lootah affirmed that the UAE Government focuses on strengthening the integration of government efforts and enhancing the readiness of national data as a fundamental pillar to support initiatives aimed at achieving the SDGs. He noted that this approach enables the National Committee to prepare the 2026 Voluntary National Review accurately and comprehensively, while continuing to expand cooperation and coordination among relevant entities to ensure the achievement of national targets beyond 2030, and to consolidate the UAE’s position as a leading global model in accelerating the implementation of the SDGs and strengthening its international presence.
Integration of Efforts for the Third Voluntary National Review (2026)
The General Secretariat of the National Committee on SDGs reviewed the latest updates on preparations for the Third Voluntary National Review, which the UAE will present to the United Nations in July 2026, following the 2018 and 2022 reviews. Members emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Review reflects national success stories and the UAE’s efforts in accelerating the achievement of global goals, while highlighting pioneering experiences and best practices that can be generalized internationally.
Participants stressed the importance of engaging various national sectors and relevant entities in preparing the Review to ensure the submission of a comprehensive report that reflects achieved progress, challenges and future opportunities. They reviewed the latest initiatives and developments supporting the SDGs across various fields, underscoring the adoption of innovative practices and future solutions to enhance national progress, improve data quality and strengthen the country’s readiness for the Review.
Entities participating in the meeting presented their achievements related to SDG indicators, including the Ministry of Interior, which delivered a detailed briefing on its initiatives; particularly in the areas of community safety, digital transformation and the development of smart services, and the progress achieved in data readiness in relations to the Ministry’s indicators.
Notably, the National Committee on SDGs monitors the implementation of the 2030 Global Agenda, aligns the UAE’s priorities with international goals, and exchanges expertise with partners with partners at the local and global levels.to expand the network of active stakeholders contributing to the implementation of the United Nations Agenda.
The number of air quality monitoring stations operating across the UAE reached 57 in 2024, marking a 46% increase over the past decade, compared to 55 stations in 2023, according to the latest data issued by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).
Of the total stations, 32 stations (56%) are located within populated areas, ensuring continuous monitoring of air quality in residential communities across the country.
Data from all monitoring stations indicate that the average concentrations of key air pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) remained low compared to previous years and within the limits set by the UAE National Air Quality Standards.
Air quality remains a national priority for the UAE, given its direct impact on public health and quality of life. The UAE Government has embedded air quality as a key performance indicator (KPI) under the “We the UAE 2031” Vision and the UAE Centennial 2071 Strategy, both of which aim to promote social wellbeing and a sustainable economy. In addition, air quality is one of the eight core policy priorities within the National Environmental Agenda led by MOCCAE.
According to FCSC data on the geographic distribution of monitoring stations in 2024, Abu Dhabi recorded the highest number with 21 stations (37%), followed by Dubai with 14 stations (25%), Ajman with 7 stations (12%), Fujairah with 6 stations (11%), Ras Al Khaimah with 4 stations (7%), Sharjah with 3 stations (5%), and Umm Al Quwain with 2 stations (3%).
In terms of functional distribution, residential areas account for 56% of all stations to ensure comprehensive coverage of inhabited regions, followed by roadside locations at 23%, industrial and commercial areas at 14%, while the remaining stations are distributed across other locations in the UAE.
Air quality monitoring stations play a vital role in detecting substances released into the atmosphere, directly or indirectly which may alter air composition in ways harmful to human health, living organisms, natural resources, or populated areas. The stations provide accurate daily, monthly, and annual measurements of major air pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ground-level ozone, and inhalable particulate matter.
The National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in cooperation with United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), has launched the SDGs Research Program during an event held at the university’s campus in Al Ain. The event was attended by His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs, and H.E. Prof. Ahmed Al Raeesi, Vice Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, along with a number of faculty members and students.
The launch of the program comes as part of the national efforts aimed at strengthening the contribution of higher education institutions to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and consolidating the role of scientific research in developing practical and innovative solutions that contribute to achieving the 2030 Global Agenda, in line with the UAE’s future vision of building a sustainable, knowledge-based economy.
Abdulla Lootah: Enhancing scientific research is a key tool for development and decision-making
During his address at the event, H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah affirmed that the cooperation between the National Committee on SDGs and UAEU represents a national model for integration between government entities and academic institutions. He stressed that the SDGs Research Program embodies, in its objectives and orientations, the UAE’s vision and the focus of its wise leadership on enhancing scientific research as a key tool for development and for supporting decision-making processes. H.E. further reaffirmed the commitment to empowering youth and researchers to become partners in developing practical solutions that advance the achievement of the SDGs.
Lootah added that the program serves as a national platformthat brings together academic thought and government expertise within a distinguished learning and research model that enables the transformation of research output into initiatives and policies that enhance the UAE’s standing in global indicators and support its position as a hub for sustainable knowledge.
Ahmed Al Raeesi: A milestone in the university’s journey towards research leadership
For his part, H.E. Prof. Ahmed Al Raeesi, Vice Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University, stateden that the launch of this program marks a new milestone in the university’s journey towards research leadership. He said: “At UAEU, we are pleased to be an active part of the national efforts to achieve the SDGs. Our aim today is to empower youth to be effective contributors to shaping the future, and to integrate sustainability thinking into education and scientific research to generate knowledge that provides practical solutions to the challenges of our time, from climate change to sustainable cities and clean energy.”
H.E. added that the program reflects the fruitful partnership between academic institutions and government entities, noting that the UAE has made sustainability a national priority through field action and effective partnerships. The program further strengthens the university’s position as a leading national research institution and an academic partner supporting the country’s journey towards achieving the 2030 Global Agenda.
Development of applied scientific research
The program focuses on encouraging students to develop applied scientific research across multiple fields, including climate, energy, environment, health, education, and economic growth, in addition to enhancing their skills in research, analysis, and the development of sustainable scientific solutions.
It also seeks to activate academic and institutional partnerships within an integrated national ecosystem that supports the transformation of research outputs into practical initiatives contributing to the development of public policies and the achievement of the desired societal impact.

The UAE has ranked 9th globally and 1st in the region in the World Digital Competitiveness Report 2025 issued by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland. The ranking strengthens the UAE’s position among the world’s top 10 digital performers, reaffirming its regional leadership and outperforming several advanced global economies. It also underscores the UAE’s ability to keep pace with rapid technological shifts and to build a fully integrated digital development model driven by innovation, artificial intelligence, and human capital.
His Excellency Eng. Majed Sultan Al Mesmar, Director General of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) stated that “The UAE ranking 9th globally in the 2025 Digital Competitiveness Report is a testament to the efficiency of its digital ecosystem and the maturity of its technological infrastructure across both government and economic sectors. Her Excellency Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), stated that the UAE’s ratings in the World Digital Competitiveness Report highlight the exceptional progress in digital transformation both regionally and globally. “The UAE’s success reflects the effectiveness of national strategies and policies aimed at building a sustainable, knowledge-based economy by empowering national talents, enhancing technical skills, and preparing future generations to thrive in the digital era,” H.E. noted. “These results further strengthen the UAE’s position as a leading global model in digital transformation, fostering a knowledge-driven environment, creatingsustainable opportunities for future generations andbuilding a society grounded in innovation, knowledgeand future sciences,” she added.
Global Leadership in Key Indicators
The UAE ranked 1st globally in key indicators, including internet usage, high-speed connectivity, venture capital availability, public-private partnerships, and digital skills. It also ranked 1st globally in attracting international students and global expertise. In addition, the UAE ranked among the world’s top 5 in 15 indicators and top 10 in 22 indicators, reflecting the depth and inclusiveness of its digital advancement across all sectors.
Sustained Growth in Digital Competitiveness
“The report revealed that the UAE advanced to 9th place globally, up from 18th in the first edition of the report in 2017, marking a consistent upward trajectory in digital competitiveness and highlighting the maturity of its national digital environment and proactive policy framework.”The UAE also maintained its leading regional position, remaining the only country in the Middle East among the global top 10 in digital competitiveness.
Future-Ready and Tech-Driven
According to the report, the UAE ranked 5th globally in Future Readiness, reflecting its high capacity to adopt emerging technologies and develop advanced digital ecosystems. It also ranked 6th globally in the Technology pillar, supported by robust digital infrastructure and extensive investments in advanced technologies and government digital services. In the Knowledge pillar, the UAE ranked 12th globally, underscoring the strength of its education system and national talent development initiatives.
Despite global economic and geopolitical shifts and disruptions to technology supply chains, the report noted that the UAE successfully sustained its digital momentum; reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s most resilient and innovation-friendly digital economies.
For the first time, the report included data on artificial intelligence patents and private-sector investments in AI, in which the UAE ranked 1st regionally, reflecting the ambitions of its National AI Strategy 2031 and its commitment to a knowledge-driven, innovation-based economy.
These results align with the UAE’s strategic national visions, including the UAE Centennial 2071, the UAE National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, and the Digital Government Strategy, along with key national initiatives such as 1 Million Arab Coders, Advanced Research Laboratories, and National Talent Upskilling Programs.

With Sights Set to Take Effective Steps in Support of SDGs

With the participation of the National Committee on the Sustainable Development Goals, the Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work held its first meeting in 2020.
Her Excellency Reem Bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation Affairs and Chairperson of the National Committee on the Sustainable Development Goals expressed her pleasure to meet the members of the Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work.
H.E. Al Hashemi emphasized the necessity of concerted efforts to provide accurate and up-to-date data, which contributes to advancing the UAE’s competitiveness in sustainable development dossiers.
“The statistical work system requires integration in all aspects of the statistical work and data collection. We should have a mutual understanding of the working mechanism in the next stage with sights highly set to achieve the vision of the UAE wise leadership in areas of sustainable development, and to move steadily forward to realizing goals of the UAE Centennial 2071,” she stated.
H.E. Al Hashemi underlined that more efforts must be exerted to make data accessible to all, and strive hard to promote and further boost up partnerships between government and local entities along with the private sector. She also touched upon areas of improvement in the statistical work by saying: “We have to invest in the mutual advantages generated by the enormous volumes of data, knowledge, and experiences to serve best the important initiatives and projects dedicated to supporting the statistical work, and enhance the achievement of the SDGs in UAE.”
H.E. Reem Bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi availed the opportunity to extend her sincerest appreciation to all the national statistics centers for their dedicated efforts to provide data and further enhance the UAE’s competitiveness in various global competitiveness reports. She stressed: “The UAE today is a role model in areas of developing strategies for achieving the SDGs. We look forward, through our meeting, to unifying the efforts of statistics centers to identify solutions to challenges and turn them into genuine opportunities.”
H.E., the State Minister, concluded her statement by giving weight to the fact that UAE deserves that everyone pushes himself to the limit to bring our homeland to the level of developed country worldwide, and create a better future for present and future generations.
H.E. Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Director-General of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority (FCSA) and Deputy Chairperson of the National Commission on SDGs, thanked H.E. Reem Bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi for attending the meeting and the directives and remarks she presented.
H.E. Lootah added: “Our work in the Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work and the National Committee on SDGs focuses on the significance of data and statistics in achieving the indicators of the UAE National Agenda 2030, constant quest to further boost up the achievements, and adopting innovation as a systematic work approach to achieve the goals of the UAE Centennial 2071.”
While highlighting the significance of this meeting, H.E. Lootah pointed out that joint meetings constitute a real opportunity to discuss visions and ideas that would add value to the dialogue on supporting partnerships between statistics entities to move forward of achieving the SDGs.
He also stated: “This would enhance our work in parallel with global efforts exerted to achieve sustainability. It would also help identify priorities, discuss challenges, and review a range of innovative and effective solutions that contribute to accelerating the pace of achieving the SDGs in the UAE.”
Commenting on the significance of the meeting, Abdullah Ahmed Al Suwaidi, Acting Director-General of the Statistics Center- Abu Dhabi (SCAD), assured SCAD’s commitment to achieving the SDGs. He said: “This meeting was of outstanding importance and meant to exchange experiences, reviewing the best practices in the field of sustainability, and highlighting the vital role of statistical data in supporting the sustainability process. It also dedicated to identify the best methods to take advantage of the statistical data, improve its quality and make them accessible to the public, and channel them in the manner that contributes to the UAE’s progress and prosperity and the world at large.”
Al Suwaidi added: “The United Nations and the member states that endorsed the Global Sustainability Agenda 2030 acknowledged the importance of providing data and statistics of development indicators as unified criteria for identifying efforts to achieve the SDGs. in view of that, all countries committed to achieving their SDGs strive hard to provide the latest figures and data on sustainability and make them accessible.”
Promoting Initiatives
Arif Al Muhairi, the Executive Director of the Dubai Statistics Center (DSC), highlighted the significance of this meeting by saying: “The statistical work system requires integrating all relevant aspects of the statistical work, data flow and developing a mutual understanding of the working mechanism through cooperation between statistics entities in the UAE.
Hailing efforts to hold this meeting, he commented: “This meeting was held with the participation of the members of the National Committee on SDGs as a genuine realization of the interest that the UAE’s wise leadership attaches to promoting initiatives and partnerships that best serve to achieve the SDGs. It is held to emphasize the importance of joint work, harnessing innovative solutions, and benefiting from the data revolution to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.”
For her part, Dr. Hajar Al Hubaishi, Executive Director of the Ajman Statistics and Competitiveness Center, emphasized: “The meetings of the Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work are held according to a general framework dedicated for the process of developing and implementing statistical work in the UAE. This could be realized by achieving coordination and integration among official statistical entities, government authorities, and the private sector institutions to ensure that the flawless flow of data effectively and systematically.”
Dr. Hajar went on to say: “The joint meeting earned special importance as it is held with the participation of the members of the National Committee on SDGs. This definitely, contributes to developing a data environment that supports the efforts exerted to achieve the SDGs in the UAE through devising tools and means to ensure the provision of accurate and up-to-date data. They all are meant to contribute to the efforts exerted to achieving sustainability in the UAE by implementing various strategic initiatives and projects.”
On his turn, H.E. Humaid Rashid Humaid Al Shamsi, Secretary-General of the Executive Council of Umm Al Quwain, shed light on the commitment of Umm Al Quwain Emirate to coordinate and combine efforts of the national statistics entities and provide support to them to make optimal use of data and the best methods of collecting and analyzing them.
He pointed out: “This is done to support the national statistical work systems, to implement the best practices in this vital sector and to take advantage of the methodologies designed to support sustainable development dedicated to realizing the directions of the UAE Government and its federal and local authorities to achieve the SDGs. Such efforts will finally lead to promote methods to achieve our national agenda and the UAE Centennial 2071.”
On the other hand, H.E. Najwa Yaacoub, Executive Director of RAK Center for Statistics & Studies, singled out the need to conclude partnerships in the field of statistical work to support the SDGs.
She stated: “This meeting is one of the active channels of communication with the strategic partners to contribute to pursuing the achievement of the SDGs. Moreover, it is an opportunity to develop the appropriate statistical work mechanisms to harness innovation to achieve sustainable development, one of the catalysts for realizing growth in many other vital sectors.
H.E. Najwa Yaacoub mentioned that the meeting agenda focused on expanding the methods to support and measure the UAE National Agenda designed to contribute to achieving the SDGs 2030. Also, the agenda focused on the importance of data and statistics to support decision-making processes and achieving the anticipated achievements at the level of the UAE and the world at large.”
Dr. Ibrahim Saad, Director of the Fujairah Statistics Center, underlined that the meeting received additional importance as it is being held to enhance the position of statistics in sustainable development.
He pointed out: “The statistics sector receives immense care and attention of the UAE’s wise leadership based on the importance of its active role in policy and decision-making, as well as contributing to establishing development projects.”
Dr. Ibrahim indicated that providing accurate statistical information contributes to drawing strategic plans for sustainable development in the UAE, and enhances the flow of data and indicators between the government departments and private sector institutions.
Dr. Ibrahim concluded by stating that “This would have positive implications in realizing developments in economic and social growth. It would absolutely enhance methods adopted to achieve the SDGs 2030 and boosts the UAE’s competitiveness in global reports and indicators.”
Dubai (Union) – The Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work at the national level had its fourth meeting at the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre in Dubai; where they discussed the National Statistics Strategy plan, as part of its efforts to enhance continuous assessments of new emerging needs and improve the efficiency of the statistical system to serve development programs at both the national and international levels. The meeting was attended by H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the Department of Statistics and Community Development, H.E. Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre and Chairman of the Committee, H.E. Abdullah Gharib AlQemzi, Acting Director General of the Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi, H.E. Younus Al Nasser, Assistant Director General, Digital Dubai & CEO, Dubai Data Establishment, Dr. Hajar Al Hubaishi, Executive Director of Ajman Statistics Center, Najwa Yaqoub, Executive Director of the Ras Al Khaimah Center for Statistics and Studies, and H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Saad, Director of Fujairah Statistics Center. H.E. Hanan Ahli, emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between the statistical entities in the country through the exchange of knowledge and experiences and unifying standards of statistical processes. She pointed out that the upcoming action plan will prioritize designing the future statistical system and ways to improve the competitiveness of the UAE in global reports and indicators. She highlighted the importance of focusing on technical areas with a high impact on the national statistical strategy. The Committee stressed the importance of the participation of the UAE delegation in the fifty-fifth session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, in coordination with the Office of the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations, as the meetings of the Committee represent an ideal opportunity to build channels of communication and fruitful cooperation with international statistical authorities. It is worth mentioning that the Higher Committee for Coordinating Statistical Work was established at the national level in 2016 as a national initiative aimed at enhancing partnership opportunities, developing mechanisms for joint work, intensifying coordination among statistical entities in areas of statistical work development, and designing policies and implementing strategies based on data supporting decision-making processes.

The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority (FCSA) participates in the Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2020 (GWFD 2020) scheduled to be held today under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, during 16-17 February 2020 under the theme “The Power of Influence”.
As per the forum agenda, FCSA is participating in several main sessions, in addition to introducing an innovative digital interactive screen designed to display the most recent facts and figures on the UAE journey in empowering women, and its achievements in the most important global competitiveness reports and indicators on women empowerment and gender balance.
FCSA would also introduce a special report on the role of women in development in partnership with the Dubai Women Establishment, National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, and the Arab Youth Center.
On its participation in GWFD 2020, H.E. Abdullah Nasser Lootah, FCSA Director-General stated: “FCSA is proud to actively participate in GWFD 2020 by contributing to the main agenda and providing the essential support to this important global event. GWFD 2020 is a platform to document the UAE sustained achievements in realizing gender balance and women empowerment in all areas.”
“FCSA would make sure to shed light on the UAE notable achievements in areas of laws, procedural improvements and the results achieved due to accurate and updated data, and their repercussions on the most important global competitiveness reports and indicators,” H.E. Lootah added.
Plenary Sessions
H.E. Hanan Ahli, Executive Director of the Competitiveness and SDGs Sector at FCSA, said: “FCSA would showcase its experience in several dossiers on women’s empowerment and their relationship to achieving SDGs 2030 through supporting decision-makers. Such support is realized by providing and making the accurate and up-to-date data accessible to them, and introducing legislative and procedural improvements to laws on women and their role in society, as well as the economic and knowledge development processes.”
H.E. Ahli stated: “FCSA aims through its participation in GWFD 2020 to showcase the adopted best practices in UAE which in total designed to achieve sustainable development. We would also present UAE’s success stories in harnessing the competitiveness strategy to achieve humanitarian goals, in addition to the most important lessons learned in producing and making data on women’s empowerment accessible to the public.”
An Interactive and Figure-Based Screen Highlighting Emirati Women Leadership
As part of the its input to the forum, FCSA plans to reveal an interactive display screen to all visitors and guests to view the recent data, statistics, and indicators of global competitiveness achieved by UAE in addition to all that related to supporting and enhancing women’s leadership, pioneering and social role in UAE. This data is displayed in a unique interactive visual style which facilitate displaying and explaining the data and indicators smoothly and simply.”
Noteworthy, the second edition of GWFD2020 would tackle several thematic subjects that present diverse insights and international experiences from around the world. Part of the prominent dossiers that would be addressed is the role of women in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and their contribution to achieving SDGs and the innovation industry. GWFD 2020 agenda would also address other several topics, namely peace and prosperity, the role of governments in developing strategies to ensure gender balance, and harnessing modern technology to achieve this balance and the most effective empowerment in all areas.
The Ministry of Community Development announced the launch of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2024, in cooperation with national statistics centers in all emirates of the country, in a comprehensive national initiative that will continue for a whole year. The survey covers about 19,000 households nationwide and aims to provide a series of data and indicators related to the economic and social lifestyles of families, in addition to studying the conditions and standards of living within the country, and the seasonal changes that families go through for their income and spending over a whole year. Leadership’s Vision Her Excellency Shamma bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Community Development, said: "In accordance with the vision of the wise leadership, the UAE launched The National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031, with the aim of moving from the concept of a good life to a comprehensive concept of integrated wellbeing," stressing the commitment of the Ministry of Community Development to continue improving the aspects of life for individuals and families through a scientific approach that seeks to progress development plans and programs and renewable services that touch the reality of the needs of Emirati families, which supports their cohesion and stability and protects their members within the framework of a sustainable development plan. Her Excellency pointed out that the survey on household income and expenditure represents a major step the importance that the Ministry and its partners are working on at a state level to feed the database of families, and this is integrated with the plans and initiatives that the Ministry is working on to serve the community in the UAE. For his part, His Excellency Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, stressed that the wise vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him, places providing a decent life for Emirati families as a priority, and aims to enhance their quality of life and happiness, to ensure a decent and sustainable life and a bright future for all family members. His Excellency praised the efforts of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre from developing the "Household Income and Expenditure Survey" project and continuously stressing awareness from the beginning of the importance of this survey, which provides data and figures that constitute a reality of household income and expenditure levels in the country, which constitutes in its objectives a major step for decision-makers and officials to identify the data and indicators resulting from the survey, develop strategic development plans, in addition to implementing initiatives, whether social or economic, to improve all aspects of life for individuals and families, which would reflect positively on all components of these families, hence providing a decent quality of life that enhances their happiness. His Excellency highlighted that the Community Development Department in Abu Dhabi places great emphasis on the family, considering it the "foundation and nucleus" for a cohesive and interconnected society that contributes to the progress and prosperity of the emirate. This has led to the launch of the department’s "Abu Dhabi Family Wellbeing Strategy," which is a comprehensive plan aimed at continuing to empower families and supporting their efforts in the emirate. This strategy encompasses children, youth, elderly citizens, residents, and all individuals, ensuring the provision of a nurturing and healthy environment for all families.
Quality of Life
Her Excellency Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority in the Government of Dubai, said: "The UAE, under the leadership of the President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the directions of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, believes that enhancing the quality of life of families is a great priority, and is working to enhance and consolidate it for the benefit of achieving the gains of all its members." Her Excellency pointed out that the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2024 represents a qualitative step to update data and information that will support decision-makers and officials in developing Strategic plans and qualitative initiatives that improve the lives of families in the UAE, indicating that the Community Development Authority is working to provide multiple social services and programs aimed at improving the lives of the individual and society, and strengthening family ties to build a cohesive society.
International standards
For his part, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Statistics and Community Development, said that the data collection process is carried out according to specific international principles and standards, stressing that dealing with the data that will be collected through the survey will be confidential, and will be used for the purposes of research and statistical study.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi called on members of the community to cooperate fully to make this survey a success and support the planning process for the economic and social development of the UAE.

Her Excellency Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre stated that the United Arab Emirates is witnessing the implementation of a Family Income and Expenditure Survey every five years. Experts from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center, in collaboration with national statistical centers, have developed an approved scientific design for the sample of households to be visited. Hanan Ahli added that the survey will provide outputs related to the economic and social levels of families, contributing to empowering and supporting decision-makers in the formulation of economic and social policies. It will also provide data and results that enhance all aspects of life for individuals and families in the country. She noted that the survey sample will cover all emirates in the country, involving approximately 19,000 households, and represents an advanced mechanism to survey aspects of consumer spending in areas such as housing, education, health, and more.
A Careful Approach
In the same context, Abdullah Gharib Al Qamzi, Acting Director General of the Statistics Center – Abu Dhabi, confirmed that the samples were designed according to a proportional distribution method based on the number of households in the emirate. This approach ensures the required level of accuracy through an integrated process conducted in collaboration with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center and national statistical centers, using the latest scientific methods. Al Qamzi said: "The Household Income and Expenditure Survey is carried out periodically to provide data on household income and expenditure. According to demographic and family characteristics, studying the levels of income and expenditure of the family and the individual and showing its relationship to economic and social factors, in addition to the distribution of individuals and families according to income and expenditure groups, collecting the necessary data to support the relevant projects, and estimating the national accounts related to income and consumption.
Spending Patterns
Younus AlNasser is the Assistant Director General, Digital Dubai & CEO, Dubai Data Establishment, said: "The Household Income and Expenditure Survey is in line with the higher national trends that are inspired by the vision of ‘We the UAE 2031’, which stipulates the establishment of the most prosperous society on a global level. The survey also embodies the importance of relying on digital data to draw conclusions and make decisions that contribute to building a brighter future, achieving community happiness, and consolidating the UAE’s leading position in various relevant global indicators".
Dr. Hajar Saeed Al-Hubaishi, Executive Director of Ajman Statistics Center, said The Household Income and Expenditure Survey aims to calculate the average income and expenditure of the individual and family. This data is linked to multiple factors such as education, profession, and activities. economic, as well as demographic, social and economic aspects. The survey provides accurate indicators on the monthly income and expenditure of households and individuals and helps estimate the current demand for goods and services. It also makes it possible to predict the future needs of the population with regard to goods and services.
Community Well-Being
Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Shayeb Al-Naqbi, Director-General of the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Economic Development, pointed out that the data of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey provide the necessary indicators to assess the level of well-being of households and individuals. By knowing the characteristics of the housing inhabited by the family, the durable goods available to it, the expenses of families on various items of expenditure, and identifying the activities of the informal sector, such as the activity of agriculture within the family sector (self-production outside the establishments), and its importance to the national economy. Dr. Ibrahim Saad, Director of the Fujairah Statistics Centre, said that the household income and expenditure survey will meet the needs of the SNA of data necessary to prepare national accounts related to the final consumption of households, in addition to measuring the inflation rate, and calculating the quantities and values of consumption of goods and services to estimate the demand for them in the future."
In recognition of Inventing the Geospatial Data Hub for SDGs

The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Authority (FCSA) succeeded in putting firm hands on the “Excellence in GIS Implementation (EGI) Award” in the category of GIS Sustainable Development. FCSA received the award during its participation in the “GOVWORX’20” Conference recently organized in Dubai by "GISTEC" Company.
The award is granted to federal and local government authorities to recognize their contributions to implementing geographic information systems (GIS). FCSA received the award in a credit of the efforts exerted to develop the "Geospatial Data Hub for the Sustainable Development Goals”, which is part of the “Geospatial Statistical System” initiative launched to expand the scope of implementing the geographic information, and achieving the optimal use of the geographic planning in statistics, surveying, measuring indicators, and monitoring the UAE progress is the area of sustainable development.
H.E. Mohamed Hasan, Executive Director of the National Statistics and Data Sector at FCSA, availed this opportunity to highlight the FCSA commitment and relentless efforts exerted to the most advanced technologies in the area data sciences to ensure getting accurate information. He pointed out that this achievement is the result of fruitful and active partnerships between FCSA and several federal and local government authorities in the UAE.
“We are proud of this remarkable achievement made by FCSA. It is my pleasure to extend my appreciation to the team who invented, developed, and accomplished the geospatial data project for the sustainable development goals,” he added.
Noteworthy, the “Geospatial Statistical Systems” cover three underpinning pillars. The first pillar deals with the single map, which is the fundamental pillar for survey planning and conducting geographical analyses. In addition to the single map, there is the national map of the seven emirates, designed to present the demographic data, and community facilities in the health and education sectors.
The second pillar addressed the issue of empowering the national geographic statistics, including national administrative statistics data and the national survey data. Such data take advantage of the demographic data sets and community facilities to enrich data and support statistical analysis.
The third pillar covers the Geospatial Data Hub for the Sustainable Development Goals, with sights set to make the FCSA’s statistical indicators public. The hub established by the FCSA has been linked to the UN Stats Open SDG Data Hub, which is designed to monitor and record the countries’ progress in achieving the SDGs through the feature of synchronizing and sharing the data provided by the FCSA’s hub.
Since its birth in 2007, the annual Excellence in GIS Implementation (EGI) Award has become the most prestigious award in MENA and India in the area of GIS.
